There is an appealing background to the Cambodia gambling dens that reside just over the dividing line from neighboring Thailand, in which casino gaming is not allowed. Eight casinos are situated in a relatively small space in the municipality of Poipet in Cambodia. This conclave of Cambodia casinos is in a perfect destination, a 3 to four hour trip from Bangkok and Macao, the two most popular wagering locations in Asia. Cambodia gambling halls do a thriving business with Thai laborers and tourists from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with only very few Westerners. The phenomenal income gained from the gambling halls ranges from seven and a half million dollars to over 12.5 million dollars, and there are a number of limitations constraints for gambling den ownership. Ownership is required to be mainly Thai; however, financial sources are cryptic. The borders are officially open from 09:00 to 17:00, and even though visas are allegedly needed to cross, there are means around this, as is real of most border crossings.
The original Cambodia gambling halls premiered in Phnom Penh in 1994, but were required to close in 1998, leaving just 1 casino in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, an anchored bateau gambling hall, highlights 150 slots and 60 gaming tables. The Naga gambling den never closes with 42 tables of mini-punto banco, 4 tables of vingt-et-un, ten of roulette, 2 of Caribbean Stud Poker, and 1 each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.
The 1st gambling den in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, premiered in 1999 and the Golden Crown quickly opened. There are one hundred and fifty slot machine games and five table games at the Golden Crown and 104 slots and 68 tables at the Holiday Palace. The newer Holiday Palace Casino and Resort features 300 slots and 70 gaming tables and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has 166 one armed bandits and 96 table games, including eighty seven baccarat chemin de fer (the most popular game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. Also, there is the Casino Tropicana, with one hundred and thirty five slot machines and sixty six of the common tables, as well as a single table of Casino Stud Poker. Another one of the eight gambling dens in Poipet, again a part of a hotel, is the Princess Casino with one hundred and sixty six slots and 97 table games. The Star Vegas Casino is is located in an international resort and hotel building that features many comforts on top of the casino, which offers 10,000 square feet of one hundred and thirty one armed bandits and 88 table games.
